PhD Students Receive Orientation

The School of Graduate Studies and Research (SGSR) and Faculty of Computing and Information System (FOCIS) have organized an orientation programme for the pioneering Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) students in Computer Science. 

The ceremony, which was held on October 4, 2023, at the President’s Conference Room, main campus Tesano, aimed at preparing these students for their academic journey under their programme. 

The Dean of the SGSR, Prof. Ebenezer Malcalm, on behalf of the Vice- Chancellor and the University management congratulated the new students, on their admission to pursue their PhD programme at GCTU    including educating them on the University’s rules and regulations as well as providing the platform for the new students to interact with the University’s authorities.

Prof. Malcalm, who was one of the resource persons, said that the orientation programme was historic because the students were the first cohort for the University’s wholly home-grown programme that had been developed through the Faculty of Computing and Information System.  

Professor Malcalm gave a presentation on ‘Highlights of SGSR Resources, Policies and Regulations’ which included insights into the history of GCTU’s SGSR, that had been responsible for coordinating graduate programmes, various Departments, teaching activities and resources. 

The Head of the Computer Science Department, Dr. Martin Mabeifam Ujakpa, highlighted the roadmap/structure of the GCTU four-year Doctoral Programme, which had been aligned with GTEC’s prescription. He added that, GCTU is committed to Computer Science excellence and noted that the programme is ascribed with the ACM curriculum and praised the experienced faculty for their contributions towards the realization of the PhD programme. 

The Acting Dean of FOCIS and officer-in-charge of PhD Student Support, Dr. William Brown-Acquaye shared his educational journey as a PhD student. He noted that the Faculty had resolved to change the perception about pursuing PhD in Ghana and urged the students to be punctual to lectures, seminars and dedicated to their studies. 

The Co-ordinator, Doctoral Programmes, Dr. Esther Asiedu congratulated the students on their admission to GCTU. She assured them that, the University would provide them with quality academic services to excel in their studies and assured them that her office remained opened to listen to their concerns in line with the university’s ‘students centered’ core value. 

The Head of Administration at SGSR, Mr. Mark Ofori Nketia, also took the opportunity to congratulate the students and guided them through the institution’s Academic Policies and Regulations underlining the importance of providing accurate information. He urged students to visit the appropriate offices for issue resolution and assured them of management’s commitment to their welfare.
