
The School of Graduate Studies and Research (SGSR) of GCTU has hosted a one-day orientation programme for its newly admitted postgraduate students (Masters and PhDs), on September 18, 2025, at the Florence Onny Auditorium.
The event, which was organized both in-person and online, aimed at providing essential information for a smooth transition and fostering academic and strong social integration among students, faculty and staff.

Speaking at the event, the Vice-Dean of SGSR, Prof. Frank Gyimah Sackey, congratulated the new students on behalf of the Dean of SGSR and the Acting Pro. VC, Prof. Ebenezer Malcalm. He emphasized on the ‘WELCOME’ acronym, highlighting its significance: W for Willing, E for Enlightened, L for Life, C for Creative, O for Observance, M for Maturity, and E for Evergreen. Prof. Gyimah Sackey further added that the significance of orientation is to prepare students for success, while encouraging them to uphold academic integrity and ethics. He noted that the GCTU has dedicated and qualified lecturers who are in high demand, promising students a valuable experience. Prof. Gyimah Sackey gave a presentation on GCTU’s vision, mission and core values, highlighting the transition of GCTU to a fully-fledged public University. He provided insight into the structure, policies and regulations of SGSR and urged the students to work diligently to achieve their academic goals.

The Head of Administration at SGSR, Dr. Mark Ofori Nketia, also took the opportunity to congratulate the students and encourage them to visit the appropriate offices for issue resolution, highlighting the University’s open-door policy. On behalf of the Director of Finance, Mr. Ernest Apraku, he provided essential information on tuition policy and account management.
The Co-ordinator, Doctoral Programmes, Dr. Esther Asiedu, also congratulated the students on their admission to GCTU. She elaborated on the University’s commitment to student support and guidance. “We have dedicated faculty members and staff to guide, support and inspire you throughout your academic journey,” she remarked. In addition, Dr. Asiedu gave a presentation on behalf of the HoD of Management, Prof. Theresa Obuobisa-Darko as part of the orientation programme.

The Dean of the Faculty of Computing and Information Systems (FOCIS), Dr. William Leslie Brown-Acquaye, stated that FoCIS offers programmes ranging from diploma to PhD. He emphasized the faculty’s commitment to supporting students’ academic journeys, ensuring their happiness and success. “We have the tools and staff to support your academic journey. This journey can be full of uncertainties, but we are here to help you navigate and achieve your goals,” he noted.

The Dean of GCTU Business School, Prof. George Oppong Ampong, assured the students of the quality of tuition and encouraged them to be serious with their studies.
The HoD of Telecom Engineering, Dr. Daniel Ngala, on behalf of the Dean of the Faculty of Engineering, Dr. Ruhiya Abubakar, discussed what the course seeks to achieve, stating that it will give students the capacity to analyze practices in the telecommunication and engineering industry respectively. He further added that it will enhance employability, strategic focus and business acumen.

The HoD of Computer Science, Dr. Emmanuel Freeman, presented an overview of Master’s and Doctoral programmes and academic expectations, stressing that the programmes are dynamic fields that require dedication, innovation and excellence.
Dr. John Kani Amoako discussed the significance of Internet of Things (IoT) and Big Data on behalf of the HoD of Mobil and Pervasive Computing, Dr. Emmanuel Eli Fianu. He stressed that billions of devices are interconnected (smartphones, healthcare sensors, industrial machines), generating enormous amounts of data. He further added that organizations need professionals who can process, analyze and make intelligent decisions from this data.
In his closing remarks, Prof. Frank Gyimah Sackey, on behalf of the Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Emmanuel Ohene Afoakwa and Management, expressed gratitude to the students for attending the event and to the lecturers for their insightful presentations. He emphasized, that faculty and staff are committed to providing a supportive and inclusive environment for students’ academic success.
