New Postgraduate Students Begin Their Academic Journey
The School of Graduate Studies and Research (SGSR) has held an orientation programme for its freshly admitted postgraduate students (Masters and PhD’s), on September 18, 2024, at Florence Onny Auditorium, main campus.
The event aimed at providing essential information for a smooth transition and fostering academic and strong social integration among students, faculty and staff.
Welcoming the new students, the Dean of the SGSR, Prof. Ebenezer Malcalm, emphasized the significance of orientation in preparing students for success and encouraged them to uphold academic integrity and ethics.
Prof. Malcalm delivered a comprehensive presentation on “GCTU’s SGSR Structure, Policies and Regulations” in which he provided insights on the history of the Graduate School. He enlightened the students on the coordination between SGSR and the various Departments to ensure seamless support in terms of teaching activities and resources. He urged them to familiarize with the institution’s policies, regulations and rules and work diligently to achieve their academic goals.
The Dean of the Faculty of Engineering, Dr. Ruhiya Abubakar, discussed the course structure, assessment methods and grading system, stating that all those elements were crucial to their success and charged them to navigate their academic journey with confidence and stay focused. She encouraged them to think creatively and critically, develop innovative solutions, attend lectures, meet deadlines for projects, assignments and reports. Dr. Abubakar charged students to participate in seminars and conferences. She concluded her presentation with an inspirational quote from Victor Hugo’s quote, “He who opens a school door, closes prison.”
The Dean of FoCIS, Dr. William Brown-Acquaye, emphasized GCTU’s commitment to fostering an environment that promotes both academic and personal growth. He encouraged the students to take advantage of the opportunities available to them, overcome challenges and realize their full potential.
The Head of Computer Science Department, Dr. Emmanuel Freeman, outlined the course concepts and academic expectations, stating that they are a dynamic field that requires dedication, innovation and excellence. He encouraged them to strive for academic rigor, research quality and industry relevance.
The Head of the Department of Mobile Pervasive Computing, Dr. Lempogo Forgor, offered valuable insights into the programme’s structure, highlighting its focus on fostering innovation, industry collaboration and the creation of impactful technologies.
The Head, Department of Information Technology, Dr. Patrick Acheampong discussed programme overview, the mode of assessment and academic expectations. He indicated that his Department is dedicated to fostering a culture of excellence, innovation and collaboration to prepare students to successful career in academia, industry and research.
The Head of Administration at SGSR, Dr. Mark Ofori Nketia, elaborated that the open door policy of the University is a great way to foster a culture of transparency, underlining the importance of providing accurate information. He encouraged students to visit the appropriate offices for issue resolution and assured them of Management’s commitment to their welfare.
Dr. Nketia also provided essential information on tuition policies and account management.
The Coordinator of Doctorial Programmes, Dr. Esther Asiedu, shared insights on “Life in the PhD Unit.” She said that embarking on a PhD journey required dedication, perseverance and passion. Dr. Asiedu assured the PhD students of her Unit’s support throughout their challenging yet rewarding experience.
The Head, Department of Management Studies at the Business School, Prof. Theresa Obuobisa-Darko, emphasized that learning extends beyond lectures and textbooks, urging the students to leverage on faculty advisors, mentors, career counselors and industry experts to broaden their knowledge and skills.
In his closing remarks, the Dean of the Business School, Prof. George Ampong, emphasized the importance of students adhering to their lecturers’ and supervisors’ instructions and utilizing the university’s resources for academic success. He encouraged students to tap into the expertise of the University’s skilled lecturers and staff and to make full use of the well-equipped library facilities.
