Prof. Frank Gyimah Sackey

Prof. Frank Gyimah Sackey is a distinguished economist, academic leader, and researcher who currently serves as the Vice Dean of the School of Graduate Studies and Research (SGSR) at Ghana Communication Technology University (GCTU). His career spans academia, research, and policy, reflecting his dedication to advancing knowledge, nurturing the next generation of scholars, and contributing to Ghana’s socio-economic development.

Prof. Sackey’s academic journey began at the University of Cape Coast, where he earned both his Bachelor of Education in Social Sciences (Economics) and his MPhil in Economics. His early career included teaching in the Department of Economics at Cape Coast, where he served as a lecturer and Senior Research Assistant. He also gained practical experience in applied research and development through his work at the Central Region Development Commission (CEDECOM), where he promoted investment initiatives and supported micro and small enterprises.

His career took an international turn in 2013, when he received the prestigious Martí Franqués Doctoral Fellowship to pursue doctoral studies at Universitat Rovira i Virgili in Tarragona, Spain. While completing his PhD in Economics, he lectured in International Economic Relations, participated in the Erasmus Mundus exchange programme, and engaged in doctoral research visits at the University of Copenhagen. These experiences deepened his expertise in development and financial economics, gender economics, and microeconometrics, areas that remain central to his research today.

Upon completing his PhD, Prof. Sackey returned to Ghana and continued to contribute to academia, first as a Senior Lecturer and Dean of the School of Research and Graduate Studies at the Catholic University College of Ghana. In 2019, he joined GCTU as Head of the Department of Economics. His leadership qualities and commitment to academic excellence led to his appointment as Director of the Institute of Continuing and Distance Education, and more recently, as Vice Dean of SGSR. In 2025, his outstanding contributions were further recognized when he was promoted to the rank of Full Professor.

Prof. Sackey’s research portfolio is rich and impactful. He has published extensively on topics ranging from trade openness and credit markets to technology’s impact on employment, the economics of discrimination, health economics, and the socio-economic implications of the COVID-19 pandemic. His collaborations with both local and international scholars reflect his global outlook and commitment to addressing pressing development issues. He is also a Research Fellow with the International Network for Economic Research (INFER), which situates him within a vibrant global research community.

As Vice Dean of the School of Graduate Studies and Research, Prof. Sackey plays a pivotal role in shaping postgraduate education at GCTU. He has been actively involved in orienting new cohorts of graduate students, emphasizing the importance of academic integrity, innovation, and rigorous research. His leadership is marked by a vision to enhance the quality of postgraduate training, foster research excellence, and prepare graduates to become thought leaders and problem-solvers in academia, industry, and society.
